When I think of a world with magic, I picture a world full of colours and wonder. I visualize it as if the particles of magic can be seen, like vibrant fireflies climbing towards the night’s sky and as if a magical current can be seen flowing in the sky similarly to the northern lights. Though I imagine magic as a beautiful and colourful anomaly, I also perceive it as a dark and ominous channel of energy. One that can easily be misused with ill will. Keeping this in mind, I was able to construct an image for the style of Shadow Royale—a beautifully terrifying world where vivid colours could provide serenity or uncertainty. As a person with such a creative mind, but zero skill in the artistic schools, I turned to my words to portray my ideas. Every creature, weapon and skill was written with great detail, trying to paint a picture with words. As I searched for artists, it was very important to me that they would be able to understand my descriptions and turn words into works of art.Shadow
When I saw the portfolio of Vladimír Pech and Mark Šidlovský I was immediately excited. Their previous work had the exact same style that I had envisioned from the very beginning. After some discussion about the project, I asked them to do a test drawing of a card that would ultimately be the face of the game moving forward and when I received it, I was speechless. I could not believe that a little paragraph I had written could be turned into something so accurate and amazing. Needless to say, I was more than impressed. After agreeing to terms, they began to work and continuously sent phenomenal work. Even when some things needed to be tweaked or fixed, the process was smooth and it has been a pleasure to work with them. One of my favourite things about board games is the different styles each game brings in terms of artwork. It is my hope that when people see Shadow Royale: The Magister’s Cup, they think to themselves, “This looks so amazing. I cannot wait to see the rest of the game art.” I am so excited to be able to show you all the finished project because I believe the artwork is as amazing as the game is fun and unique.
